Wasatch Block Climbing Co-op

A member-governed indoor bouldering gym in the Marmalade neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah, opened in 2018 and run as a worker-and-member cooperative.

About the co-op

Wasatch Block Climbing Co-op opened in November 2018 at 540 North 300 West, Salt Lake City UT 84103, in a converted printing warehouse. The gym is structured as a worker-and-member cooperative under Utah law: every paying member receives one vote at the annual board meeting. Wasatch Block has roughly 1,400 voting members as of early 2026.

Facilities

The gym offers 12,000 square feet of bouldering surface across three angled walls (slab, vertical, and 45-degree overhang), plus a freestanding training board patterned after a 2016 Tension Board layout. There is no rope-climbing wall and no lead-climbing wall; rope climbers are referred to a separate gym 7 miles south. The hangboard area has 9 stations with assist pulleys.

Hours and rates

Open Monday through Friday from 6:00am to 11:00pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 9:00pm. A day pass is $22; a monthly membership is $79; a co-op-member voting membership requires both the monthly fee and a one-time $250 capital contribution refundable on departure with three months' notice. Youth (ages 7–17) memberships are $49 per month and include a free coached weekly clinic.

Routesetting and competitions

The gym sets new boulder problems on a strict three-week rotation, with a full reset of the slab wall every Tuesday and the overhang wall every Thursday. Wasatch Block hosts the regional 'Citizen Send' bouldering competition every spring, capped at 220 competitors across all categories. Outside chalk balls are required (loose chalk is banned to protect wall texture); the gym sells refillable balls at cost.
